The Long family is the sixth generation of Buffalo, Wyoming residents. Having grown up in the Bighorn Mountains, John has been a hunter his whole life, having gone with his father and older brothers since he was a child. John had a strong interest in drawing and painting and, as a young person; he studied under nationally known artists perfecting these artistic talents. This interest continued through high school and resulted in many awards at art shows. He started taxidermy after attending Harry Paulson’s Mountain Valley School of Taxidermy in Phoenix, Arizona and founded Trophies Unlimited Taxidermy in 1984. Seeing the need for a full time taxidermy shop in Buffalo, John opened the doors and has been putting in overtime ever since.
John has earned numerous prestigious awards at state, regional and national taxidermy competitions in the masters division. John received, from the National Taxidermist Association (NTA), the National Award of Excellence in 1993, and had the honor of being the 1991, Distinguished Taxidermist in the Nation at NTA show in Reno, Nevada. John is a certified taxidermist with the NTA, is a NTA judge, has given seminars and instructed classes for fellow taxidermists. John’s skills have been perfected through tough competition and tough judges in the masters division. With the honors and competition skills John has developed, he has applied these techniques to his commercial taxidermy giving his customers competition quality service on all his trophy mounts.
John’s wife, Cydney, or Cyd as she prefers to be called, assists with various aspects at Trophies Unlimited. She constructs rock bases, gathers and assembles habitat materials, and attends to all aspects of office work from answering questions and billing to the shipping of the actual mounts. She is always happy to help John or a customer in any way she can.
John also operates Trophies Unlimited Outfitters and has clients for mountain lion, elk, deer, and antelope. John has kept hounds for mountain lion hunting since he was a teenager. He has had most hound breeds including Plotts, Matthes Lion Hounds, Walkers, and Redbones. This hunting background shows, not only in his big game, but especially in his cat taxidermy with amazing detail in his mountain lion mounts.
